#MicroblogMonday – Fox

A friend has this as her last name (minus “der”). I never knew or thought about it. Talk about a light bulb moment!
I wonder how many other names I’ve never known or thought about?

  1. So many last names have an origin. Like for professions: Smith (= blacksmith) or Cooper (= barrel maker) or Mason (= masonary or stone worker). Would be curious if your friend knows the origin of their surname

  2. I think about that all the time, especially when it’s a word in English that I know, like Baker. I wonder about the person’s ancestor. Who was this baker, and what was his bread like?

  3. It is the same with Indian last names. These last names were also derived from what the ancesters did as work in ancient times. Like mine is Agnihotri. If you break it ‘Agni’ means Fire and ‘hotri’ means a person who worked around fires. And no that does not mean my ancesters were Firemen 😀 hahah. I have been told my ancesters were sages who did ‘Yagnas’ for various purposes, for one purification, and that involved fire.
It intrigued and interested me a lot when I was a child.

What do you think?
